In 1985 when Norway’s AHA was storming the charts with Take On Me, New Zealand’s Andrew Tinning was taking on his first role in the industry. Having graduated from Christchurch Polytechnic with a Diploma In Visual Communication, he joined the ranks of Campaign Advertising’s Christchurch office as a Junior Art Director.
After several years of working on both local and national accounts, Andrew was recruited by DDB to join their newly opened Christchurch office, where he worked primarily on foundation clients United Bank and United Realty.
Following a couple of successful years in Christchurch, Andrew was transferred to DDB’s Wellington Office where he was employed as Senior Art Director.
His next move was back to Christchurch to join Saatchi &Saatchi as Senior Art Director and creative partner to their newly appointed CD.
In 1998 Andrew transferred to Saatchi’s Auckland office as a Senior Art Director /Writer and in 2000 was appointed Creative Director.
During his time at the helm, Andrew worked on some of the country's leading brands including Lion Nathan, NZ Wines & Spirits, TVNZ, Telecom, Telecom XTRA, NZ Lotteries, Auckland Regional Council, Sanitarium, The NZ Fire Service, The Hillary Commission, Georgie Pie and Team NZ to name a few.
They were highly creative and highly successful years, and throughout them, Andrew and his team won a truckload of creative and effectiveness awards and produced some of the country’s most loved advertising.
In 2004 he crossed the ditch and joined Marketforce Perth, a member of the Clemenger BBDO group, as Group Creative Director.
During his time at MF Andrew worked on some of the state's most prestigious brands, including Western Power the Office of Road Safety, Lotterywest, SGIO Insurance, IKEA, Brownes Fonterra, Channel 10, Crime Stoppers, WA Tourism, the Department of Health and Mrs. Mac's among others.
In 2012 Andrew started his own independent agency SHEDcsc. Starting from a zero client base, the agency was soon working with some of the state's largest, including Rio Tinto, BGC Contracting, Chicken Treat, Adventure World, The Hawaiian Group, Liquor Barons, Bendigo Bank and Vesco Foods.
After 5 successful years, Andrew decided to call time on SHED and is now offering his services and experience as a creative consultant at AT Creative. Andrew continues to work closely with a select group of local and national clients and is always on the lookout for new and interesting opportunities.
Throughout his career, Andrew has won numerous local, national and international awards including multiple gold silver and bronze Cannes Lions. But more importantly, he has helped his clients and their brands to grow and prosper.
In 2014, he was named Western Australia's Creative Of The Decade and has been consistently ranked by Campaign Brief as as one of Australasia's top 10 creatives.
In 2020, Bestads international named him as their no.1 global copywriter for the past decade.
Andrew is a sessional staff member at Edith Cowan University where he has tutored as part of the creative strategy unit. He also tutored at the prestigious Zhejiang Normal University in Jinhua China for three consecutive years prior to the Covid 19 pandemic.
